About the performance

The play is staged in Nowy Teatr (10/16 Madalińskiego Str., Warsaw)

The performance depicts life of a group of New York-based gay men in the ’80 – the times of raging AIDS epidemic and ultraconservative presidency of Ronald Regan. In this multithreaded, epic story issues of sexual identity intertwine with great politics, ideology, racial and social problems and religion and the characters created by the author mix with authentic historical figures. Excellent text by Tony Kushner is an insightful analysis of an American soul. In Warlikowski’s performance it is transformed into a universal vision of love in the time of plague.

Reviews

  • “The issues that Walikowski discusses in his plays get more and more fundamental. That is why his Angels … are not even about the good and evil. Love or death. Betrayal or loyalty. The production attempts to resolve even more componential problems: responsibility and compassion. Being there for another person in their darkest hour and the ability to listen to other people. Is it only then, that we grow into our own humanity?”

    Łukasz Drewniak, Dziennik
  • “The performance, composed of two parts, shines with thousands of sparkles, multiplied endlessly by glass panels surrounding the stage. (…) Faith penetrates the bodies of Warlikowski’s actors. How else can their determined and passionate acting and mastery skills be described? They are wonderful from the beginning untill the end, and entirely in their roles. Their bodies loose themselves in the portrait of contemporary society. Great moment for the theatre.”

    Marie-José Sirach, L’humanite
