About

In 1985 in the Stary Teatr in Cracow Krystian Lupa staged “The City of Dream”, based on the novel “The Other Side” by Alfred Kubin. The performance was “a record of an individual catastrophe” of the protagonist. After twenty seven years he revisits Patera’s project, but this time he looks at it from the perspectives of two antagonistic and conflicting parties. Kubin’s City of Dream, a peculiar socio-urban parasite constituting an archetypical promise of a better life, functions as a gauge to study the contemporaneity: the ailments of collective thinking, the eclectics of the new world, the critical potential of a utopia. As a result of a progressive mutation, there is no individual protagonist in the Pearl – there is a group, there is no individual marriage – there are several couples, cities and dreams.

For organized post-gymnasium school groups we offer introductory workshops to the performance (please contact the education department: edukacja@trwarszawa.pl for more details).

The performance is coproduced by TR Warszawa

Reviews

  • “The performance is a long expedition through evocative monologues and captivating, intensive events. Underpinned with a charming sensuality, virulent irony. shocking picture of the human condition and existential doubts.”

    Amaury Jacquet, Publik’Art
  • “ (…) The City of Dream is, first and foremost, a play about theatre, an oniric journey which enables us to reach, if only for a moment, the other side – a parallel reality where such absolute certainties as time, logics and the consciousness fade away in our minds. In his best scenes, the director manages to find a way to this world, and the cast and audience share the same condition – they’re daydreaming.”

    René Solis, Libération
  • “Yet again a Polish director opens for us the gate to an unexpected world, that evokes, in equal measure, fascination and anxiety – the world imagined by the magical visionary, writer and painter Alfred Kubin.”

    Jean-Pierre Thibaudat, France Inter
