About

How to stay yourself in a world, where our identity creates so many, often conflicting, narratives? This is one of the questions that Anna Karasińska poses her brilliant directing debut: “Evelina’s Crying”. Now in TR Warszawa

The performance’s script comprises fantasies, received opinions regarding actors and actresses, and the image they project in the media. The actors and actresses taking part in the production attempt to play themselves as they may be imagined by someone else. Unable to correct what is being said about them, they remain stuck in their arbitrary and incomplete representations that mix with their private truth. As a result of this multiplicity of roles it is hard to say who is actually saying the lines spoken on stage.

From the author:

We deconstruct the theatre environment to achieve some kind of closeness with the audience and with ourselves. Absurdity of the created situation allows us to escape the expectations and schemes. In our work we’ve turned everything on its head plenty of times, and experienced the freedom that followed. We hope the audience will also feel it.”

Reviews

  • “An antidote to theatrical boredom. Great!”

    Zdzisław Pietrasik, TVP Kultura
  • “Anna Karasińska’s witty and subversive debut (…) is a comedy spun from imaginings of theatrical magic, dreams of an acting career, and the underlying awareness of the ruthless hierarchies of artistic circles. Karasińska toys with different layers of fiction, mocking the cult of stars and of glamour-style avant-garde “to be” fashionable city venues.”

    Witold Mrozek, Gazeta Wyborcza
  • “Wittily and without any pathos, she exposes the lie of the theatre, taking away its glamour, and poking gentle fun.”

    Jacek Wakar, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna
