About reading
In a common room in the Bielany cultural center a group of men holds regular meetings. Their main objective is supporting women. They debate, have discussions, and read “Women’s Hell” by Tadeusz Boy Żeleński. Eventually it turns out that their motives are not as noble as they claim and their speeches, full of feminist clichés, do not translate into any actions. The malaise deepens, an avalanche of mutual accusations ensues, and this utopian (at least in theory) project turns into a cruel fight for domination. Even when a ghost of the Boy-Żeleński himself shows up, the situation does not improve…
“The Boy-Żeleński Support Group” by Marcin Miętus is a comedy that dissects men’s hypocrisy and passivity. It is a story about a dress rehearsal for action that will never take place. The author not only creates credible characters that encourage the audience to verify their own take on the issues it tackles, but he also takes a critical look at the conditions, arguments, implications and discourses used by the characters. He reveals the contradictions rooted in their attitudes and, most importantly, provokes the audience to take a stance, encourages agency and activism based on self-awareness, real community and critical thinking.
