TR Warsaw cancels performances in Moscow and Voronezh

01.03.2022

On account of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine, TR Warszawa cancels presentations of “PIECES OF A WOMAN” at the Golden Mask Festival in Moscow and “3STRS” at the International Platonov Arts Festival in Voronezh.

On account of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, we have to cancel the
presentations of theatre performances: “3STRS” directed by Luke Perceval and “PIECES OF A
WOMAN” directed by Kornél Mundruczó, scheduled to take place in June as an element of
spring leg of TR Warszawa TR ON TOUR 2021/2022. TR Warszawa’s show “3STRS”, co-
produced by the Helena Modrzejewska National Stary Theatre in Cracow, was scheduled to be
presented on June 6 th, 2022 within the frame of the International Platonov Arts Festival in
Voronezh. Presentations of “PIECES OF A WOMAN” directed by Kornél Mundruczó were
planned for June 11 th and 12 th, 2022 at the Golden Mask Festival in Moscow. We stand in
solidarity with the Ukrainian nation and support our brothers and sisters from Ukraine. Roman
Pawłowski – TR Warszawa director’s plenipotentiary for programme commented on this issue:

On account of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine we have to cancel our guest performances scheduled to take place in June in Voronezh and Moscow: “3STRS” and “PIECES OF A WOMAN”. Theatre is the space for understanding and dialogue however, in the face of a military conflict such dialogue is impossible. We are protesting against the war instigated by Putin’s regime. We express our solidarity with the Ukrainian nation and support our brothers and sisters from Ukraine. Our hearts are with you! Ми з вами всім серцем!

THE GOLDEN MASK FESTIVAL

The Golden Mask Festival is a nationwide Russian festival of performative arts that takes place
in Moscow every year in spring and presents the most significant performances from all over
Russia and a vast international programme. At the festival, a National Theatre Award,
established in 1993, is given to winners selected by a jury. The prize may be awarded to
productions in all categories of theatre and performative arts: drama, opera, ballet, modern
dance, operetta, musical, and puppet theatre. The festival of performances nominated for the
Golden Mask Award is a major forum, presenting a full and objective picture of the Russian
theatrical life to professionals and the public. The National Theatre Award and the Golden
Mask Festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the
Moscow Government. You can learn more about the festival here.

Every year, in addition to the Russian programme, performances of international renown are
presented at the festival. At this year’s edition of the festival “PIECES OF A WOMAN” directed
by Kornél Mundruczó were selected for the international programme.

THE INTERNATIONAL PLATONOV ARTS FESTIVAL

The International Platonov Arts Festival is held annually in June in Voronezh – the birthplace
of an outstanding prose writer of the 20th century – Andrey Platonov. The first edition of the festival took place in 2010. It’s programme includes not only theatre performances but also
music events, exhibitions and literary meetings. Mikhail Bychkov is the founder and artistic
director of the Platonov Arts Festival. You can learn more about the festival here.

Since 2020 TR Warszawa has been in contact both with the Golden Mask Festival and the
International Platonov Arts Festival. Planned presentations of “PIECES OF A WOMAN”
directed by Kornél Mundruczó and “3STRS” by Luk Perceval had already been rescheduled
twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we are
forced to cancel the presentations yet again due to force majeure, having in mind the safety of
our company. We express our sympathy and solidarity with the Russian artistic companies and
Russian citizens who are the victims of political decisions. We regret that due to this
unacceptable military intervention we will not be able to meet with the audiences in Voronezh
and Moscow. Russian culture has always stood apart from politics, developing inspiring trends
and infecting the world with its insight and sensitivity.

At the same time, we would like to inform that we are suspending, until further notice, talks on planned shows of TR Warszawa’s performances in Russia as part of TR ON TOUR 2022/2023.
