“ONKO” directed by Weronika Szczawińska has been included in the program of this year’s Noorderzon Festival of Performing Arts & Society, which takes place between 12 and 21 August 2021 in Groningen. The international audience will see one of the newest premieres of TR Warszawa 5 times between 18-21 August on SPOT/De Oosterpoort stage.

NOORDERZON FESTIVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS & SOCIETY

The Dutch Noorderzon Festival of Performing Arts & Society is a progressive, modern performing arts festival with an international reach. On average, around 135-140,000 people attend the event every year. The heart of this modern festival is Noorderplantsoen, a municipal park in Groningen. For eleven days, from early morning until late at night, a variety of artistic events – theatrical, performative, musical, literary, and others – take place in a specially prepared and built festival village in tents and on open-air stages, as well as in several halls in the center of Groningen.

Every year Noorderzon presents a unique program from all over the world; works by artists that are often shown in the Netherlands for the first time. The programme includes works by internationally renowned artists and ensembles, such as Nature Theatre of Oklahoma or Ant Hampton & Tim Etchells, as well as artists whose work is being presented for the first time at an international festival in this part of Europe. The program of the 31st Noorderzon Festival of Performing Arts & Society includes, apart from Weronika Szczawińska’s performance from TR Warszawa, the “KLUTUR” performance El Conde de Torrefiel, a Spanish artistic collective, the work “dSimon” by Simon Senn, a Swiss visual artist who recently worked on the meeting of performing arts and digital media, or the VR installation “I AM” by the German director Susanne Kennedy. The audience will also see “The Museum” by Khashabi Theatre and Bashar Murkus, presented as part of the IN 2021 program of the 75th Festival d’Avignon alongside Katy Wéber’s “Particles of a Woman” directed by Kornél Mundruczó and produced by TR Warszawa.

The artistic director of the Noorderzon Festival of Performing Arts & Society is Mark Yeoman, actor, writer and director. It is worth mentioning that in 2019 Mark Yeoman was the juror of the International Theatre Festival Divine Comedy, where the TR Warszawa team was appreciated and awarded by the international jury with 5 prizes for the performances “Other People”, directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna and “Particles of a Woman”, directed by Kornél Mundruczó). Detailed information about the program of the Noorderzon Festival of Performing Arts & Society can be found on the homepage of the festival.

ONKO

The play “ONKO”, directed by Weronika Szczawińska, is based on personal experiences that brought together the director and the TR Warszawa actor, Sebastian Pawlak. What turned out to be the most difficult, instilled in them the belief that even the darkest scenario of life can be changed and played a new role. The performance will feature Sebastian Pawlak and Weronika Szczawińska, who are also co-authors of the script together with Piotr Wawr jr, the playwright and author of the musical arrangement of the performance. The co-creators and co-writers of the play are: Aleksandra Gryka (piano), Karol Radziszewski (set and costume designer) and Agata Maszkiewicz, who is responsible for movement and collaborates conceptually in the creation of the performance. The costumes were made by Aleksandra Andrychowicz, the assistant directors are: Malwina Szumacher (until 31 December 2020) and Katarzyna Gawryś-Rodriguez (from 1 January 2021), the stage manager is Piotr Piotrowicz and the production manager is Karolina Pająk-Sieczkowska.

The project was developed as part of the Sopot Non Fiction 2020 artistic residency. Originally, the premiere of “ONKO” with live audience participation was to take place in December 2020, but due to pandemic restrictions the premiere was moved to March this year. Due to the subsequent temporary closure of theaters for the public in the Mazovia region announced in early spring, the premiere of “ONKO” with the participation of the public, planned for March 19, has been moved to June 19 on the stage of TR Warszawa/Marszałkowska 8. The play’s online premiere, which was broadcast live from the stage of TR Warszawa/Marszałkowska 8 via TR Online platform, took place on March 21. The transmission was directed by film director Jagoda Szelc.
