The jury of the 14th The Divine Comedy International Theater Festival in Krakow awarded prizes in the INFERNO and PARADISO competitions. The laureates of the festival include Sebastian Pawlak, co-creator of the play “ONKO” directed by Weronika Szczawińska from the TR Warsaw (INFERNO section), Wiktor Baginski, director of the play “HEART” from the TR Warsaw (PARDISO section), and the creators of the play “CLUB” directed by Weronika Szczawińska, a production of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Warsaw co-produced with the TR Warsaw (PARDISO section).
Awards for TR Warszawa creators
The award ceremony took place on 11th December this year in the Łaźnia Nowa Theatre in Krakow. After a year-long pandemic break, the Festival returned to the INFERNO competition, featuring 9 Polish performances produced in the passing season. In this section, artists could receive the Grand Prix and 8 individual prizes, awarded this year by an international jury composed of: Marina Davidowa, Katerina Evangelatos, Oana Cristea Grigorescu, Rolf C.Hemke, Haris Paśović. In addition to the awards in the INFERNO section, the jury composed of: Carlos Aladro, Geoliane Arab, Peter Carp, Kristina Savickiene prizes were also awarded in the PARADISO section for the director and individual prizes for actresses, actors, creators from graduation projects. In this category, 10 performances by young artists took part in the competition.
Wiktor Bagiński was awarded the prize in the PARADISO category for directing the performance “The Heart”.
“For the director’s ability to approach difficult issues in a sensitive and vivid way, and to unleash the full power of the actors’ delivery.”
Sebastian Pawlak received the acting award for the best performer of a post-dramatic text in the INFERNO section for his role in the performance Onko, directed by Weronika Szczawińska.
“For a sensitive interpretation of the struggle with cancer. The stage artist moves between the dramatic and the absurd, without losing anything of his deep understanding of the female psyche.”
The performers of the play “Club” directed by Weronika Szczawińska, Julia Biesiada, Julia Borkowska, Maria Kozłowska, Katarzyna Lis, Adrianna Malecka, Magdalena Sildatk, Bernadetta Statkiewicz, Monika Szufladowicz, Helena Urbańska, Emilia Walus received two awards for the acting group in PARADISO section.
“We award the first prize in recognition of the difficult challenge taken up by the ensemble to present the situation of women in the contemporary artistic world. The second prize is awarded for conveying an important artistic and political manifesto, perfect in both form and content. The performance emphasises the strength of the ensemble while preserving the individuality of each of the actresses”.
